Is this sickness a spiritual issue? How can I tell whether this is from the enemy? Is it because I just don’t have enough faith? Why is God not healing me when I’ve confessed everything I know to confess?
These are questions our family has asked at times in our lives. In more recent years, other struggling people have asked us these same heartfelt questions, desperate for any answers we could give them.
So the question is, “Is sickness caused by physical problems or spiritual issues?”
We believe that all sin and sickness originated from the enemy. God created a world that was perfect and without sin, sickness or death. The sin-filled, disease-cursed and dying world we live in is the direct result of sin and the fall.
However, that doesn’t mean that every physical sickness we face is the result of a specificsin in our life. If you don’t experience the physical healing you’re praying for, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is from your lack faith.
I find it interesting that many times when there was physical healing in the Bible, it wasn’t because of the faith of the sick person. It was often the faith of the individual who brought the sick person to Jesus. (Some examples are Jairus’s daughter, the man who was lowered through the roof by his friends, the widow’s dead son, and the centurion’s servant.)
I encourage you to have great faith in God’s healing ability. But if someone indicates that your lack of faith is preventing your healing, remind them of these biblical examples. Because the same question can be turned back to them. Is their faith not sufficient for your healing? It may cause them to rethink their perspective.
I’ve seen miraculous physical healing, and when it’s from God’s, it’s not usually accompanied by guilt or confusion.
When one of our children was an infant, on life support, and waiting for a new heart, an individual told us that if we’d have enough faith, we would remove all life support and medication. We realize if we would have done what they strongly suggested, we probably would have lost custody of our children. We didn’t have peace and direction from God to remove this support. We asked this individual to pray in faith for healing for our children, and as the test results confirmed it, we’d ask the doctor to begin reducing the medication. But this answer wasn’t satisfactory for him.
If you look into the New Testament, most people who needed physical healing were gently touched by Jesus, while others had demons cast out of them by Jesus’ words. When demonic activity caused a physical condition, both were usually resolved with the spiritual healing. It seems as if physical diseases and sicknesses caused by demons were resolved by Jesus verbally taking authority over them. But the healing power for physical illness freely flowed from the throne of God by His physical touch. And they were instantly healed.
So, is sickness a spiritual issue or physical issue? I don’t believe the question is that simple. Based on scripture, I believe some physical and emotional sicknesses are spiritually based, while some are caused by physical conditions. It’s by God’s discernment and wisdom that we can know the difference. But God is your loving Father who indeed wants to show you what the root issue is. He doesn’t want to conceal it from you.
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”(Matt. 7: 9-11)
There’s no need to beat yourself up trying to understand if there’s a spiritual issue you need to deal with. Ask God to reveal any issue, but if He doesn’t, rest, and be in peace. And let me assure you, God always works in a gentle way. The enemy brings confusion and turmoil, but God brings gentle conviction through His still, small voice.
Any time we face a sickness, we should ask God to reveal any sin issue that needs to be repented of. But realize this is only one part of the picture. We are physical, emotional and spiritual beings. They are all connected, so they affect each other.
Spiritual oppression can (and will!) certainly cause physical sickness. We can’t get away from this cause and effect. It’s the result of living in a fallen world. In the same way, physical sickness caused by what we eat and the stress to which we expose our bodies will affect us. It’s the result of living in a fallen (and chemically induced) world.
I’ve had individuals telling me they felt so judged and condemned by those in the church that they no longer felt comfortable sharing about their physical struggles. This is sad! My friend, it’s never more spiritual to see physical sicknesses through “spiritual eyes” than it is to gently love and care for an individual who’s struggling with a health issue. Be careful in how quick you are to judge someone’s spiritual condition.
After facing years of extreme stress in my life, two years ago I found my thyroid and adrenal glands horribly messed up. I’m talking about being at the place where I felt psychologically and emotionally wrecked. I was passing out because of low blood pressure and low blood sugar levels. I had severe insomnia, heart palpitations, eye twitches, food intolerances, brain fog, and extreme temperature changes even caused fainting spells.
I thank God that I’ve been slowly recovering and am getting the help I needed. I kept asking God to show me what I was doing wrong that caused it. However, healing didn’t begin to happen until I started addressing my thyroid and adrenal gland issues from a physical perspective. It was indeed a physical imbalance. But it certainly had also affected me from an emotional and spiritual perspective. God’s shown me that I can now better reach out to others struggling with similar health challenges.
If you’re struggling with a sickness of any kind, ask God if there is a spiritual root. If you haven’t been eating properly or getting the rest you need, change that. If He reveals you’ve been embracing wrong attitudes or habits, repent and change direction. Ask God to reveal any generational curses or patterns that need to be broken in your life that could be affecting you physically.
We need to look at spiritual roots. But if you know someone who’s struggling with a physical sickness, don’t imply that all physical sicknesses have a spiritual root. When someone is at their lowest and most vulnerable time in their life, the best way you can help is by gently showing love and sympathy rather than spiritually judging them.
And please don’t ever imply that some one’s child is on life support or has died because of a lack of faith. (Someone actually communicated this to us at one point.) You may not realize the inner turmoil you may cause. Not all physical sicknesses are caused by a spiritual condition.

Posted at 10:03h, 08 JulyThank you for sharing. I struggled with physical anxiety symptoms for years. I struggled a long time with wondering what was wrong with me spiritually. It seems as I settle more in my faith the anxiety symptoms are less but still present. It brought lots of condemnation up on me as I kept struggling, wondering what is wrong. There is a pattern of that in my family history. But my faith is in Jesus Christ and I am pressing on the ward and upward ?

Posted at 23:41h, 08 JulyI often think of the verse in Ephesians 5 that talks about being wise and discerning what the will of the Lord is. So I agree that we can’t just put people into tidy categories and assume we know what God’s will is for them. It’s a much harder process to know Jesus so intimately that we can hear from Him what He wants.

Posted at 08:15h, 09 JulyThanks for sharing Cindy! I could really relate to the questions, fears etc but also know that God is not a God of confusion! After multiple times of searching my heart, repenting from things God DID show me and seeking God for healing… I came to a peace in knowing that God knows my heart ❤️He is the one we look to and trust for any kind of healing! We have heard the lack of faith thing too? And it makes you feel very vulnerable and fearful or at least confused when we feel like we have to come up to enough faith… God Bless your family!

Posted at 19:58h, 14 JulyIt’s unbelief, doubt and fear that causes people not to receive there healing. Luke 9:53-55 says Jesus put the unbelief out of the house. In other words, the people that don’t believe in healing, and that it’s always Gods will to heal he put out of the house!!
Make every prayer a statement of faith. You only need to petition God for something once. Then let your words be full of faith for what God has already done. If your praying for healing and you say if it be your will that in healed, then your not praying in faith. Faith begins where the will of God is known. Exodus 15:26 for I am the Lord who heals you. God’s will and God’s choice has already been made. Its no longer a debate. If you und
If Satan can get you in doubt and get you to speak unbelief he knows that he has you. We are operating on a word filled systemHealing is not only a promise it’s a fact. Isaiah 53:4-5 says we ARE healed and made whole. It does not say maybe you will be healed, or someday in heaven, or if it my will. Galations 3:13 says we have been redeemed from the curse. Sickness is a curse. But praise God we are no longer interested the curse we have been redeemed from it!!!
The Bible says resist the devil (sickness and anything under the curse we can resist because it’s not from God) and will flee from you. Notice it says You resist the devil. God does not do it for us. luke 9:1 says Jesus has given me the power and authority over ALL
devil’s and cure diseases. If you don’t want it in your life don’t let it in. Stand against it and command it out. It is never on God end if we don’t receive our healing it’s always on our end. God never with holds anything good from his children. It’s the believer not receiving it and lack of knowledge.
How come so many people are sick? Because they are not in the word of God. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Faith does not come by cancer or sickness or by bad things. Faith comes from truth and if you don’t find out the truth, you won’t have faith.
I’d God is getting the blame for not healing people, then people have no Revelation that God loves them. JESUS LOVES YOU!! JESUS LOVES YOU!! JESUS LOVES YOU!!

Posted at 18:14h, 25 JulyHi. Thank you for your comment. And we agree Jesus loves us and God never intended for us to experience sin, suffering and death. But things drastically changed after the fall. We’ve met others who’ve felt the same way you do. And when their child died, they still believed God was going to heal them. They commanded life into their deceased child. (After all, if strong faith is sufficient to bring physical healing, why isn’t it strong enough to raise the dead?) After their faith and speaking words of life didn’t raise their child from death’s grip, they were devastated and their faith in God was shattered. Many families have been devastated because they truly did have great faith that God was healing and their loved one died. And what caused them the most pain was the dangerous and false teaching that it was a lack of their faith. Until it happens to you personally, its easy to make blanket statements. It often takes more faith to believe God is still good and sovereign when we can’t demand healing, and life doesn’t go as we’ve hoped. The greatest faith we can have is believing and trusting in God’s goodness when He chooses not to heal. And if you take the complete word of God rather than select verses, you can easily see suffering, sickness and death is interwoven in a sin-cursed world. However, we’ve personally prayed for someone to be healed and seen miraculous healing. It’s just not something that happens each time. And its certainly not always because of lack of faith.

Posted at 05:47h, 26 NovemberHi. I have a hand condition that causes my fingers to contract into my palm. The doctor doesn`t know what is causing it, although a milder form of the condition is usually found in people from northern Europe.
My husband belongs to a ministry that believes ALL illness has a spiritual root. I am so confused, stressed and anxious because of this belief. I actually am wanting to pray or meet with other Christians less because my belief has always been that illness is just a part of life and we learn so much from it. This belief changes the way I see God`s perspective of us in that He is waiting for us to change and then we measure up enough to earn His healing. (I have been healed from infertility before, but not this or epilepsy… Which they believe is from a deaf and dumb spirit)
From my dealing with the hand condition I have touched at least 2 people`s lives.
I don`t know how to get away from this confusion and anxiety about my faith and beliefs. My heart feels very heavy. It is the first issue that has ever made me doubt my view of God. It will change everything. So either I am missing something big, or they are not right. My hand condition and epilepsy have never made me doubt God`s love and I haven`t been angry. I have been prayed for many times but no healing. And I am not disappointed in God
Please help I don`t know what to do.

Posted at 10:29h, 30 NovemberKirsty,
My heart feels heavy for you as I read this message. I’m so sorry for how you’re feeling. I believe when we are going through our most difficult trials and challenges, the enemy wants us to feel alone, and this aloneness can be devastating. I pray that God will bring individuals across your path who will care about your pain in a nonjudgemental and understanding way. I truly believe the enemy is behind the prosperity gospel and “all illnesses have a spiritual root” mentality. We have personally seen how individuals strongly believed in this and then later walked away from God when life didn’t make sense. My friend, confusion and anxiety doesn’t come from God. Satan is the author of confusion. God is a loving Father Who delights in showing us if we have a spiritual root causing a sickness. If you have asked God to reveal a spiritual issue in your life, and He hasn’t personally revealed something to you, then you can rest in that. It makes me angry when other Christians bring condemnation and play the part of the Holy Spirit when they should be praying and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to His own children. We belittle the work of the Spirit when we try to do His work. Especially to someone who’s vulnerable and hurting as you are. I wish I could give you a hug right now and assure you that God loves you and even if He doesn’t heal your hand, He has a greater plan and purpose for it. Kirsty, you are God’s daughter. He truly cares for your hurting heart. And He knows what you are going through. He wants to gently pick you up and carry you through this difficult time. God’s grace and strength is seen in a greater way through our brokenness. Love and prayers to you…
